Are the settlers of Gush Katif Zionists or anti-Zionists?

08/02/07

Are the Jewish people that lived in Gush Katif also Zionists? They were protesting the expulsion from this land by the Prime Minister. They speak of Torah not Zionism. I am very interested in learning the truth concerning what you’re presenting on your website, as well as your thoughts on my question. Thank you very much!

Yes, they are the strongest Zionists of all. Because "Zionism" has become somewhat of a negative term among religious Jews, they try to use different phrases and portray the Israeli government as being the Zionists. There are some of these extremists who have stopped saying the Hallel prayer on Israeli Independence Day because they no longer respect the government. However, this is all a confusion of the issue. Regardless of what words you use, the ideology that advocates Jewish sovereignty over any part of the Holy Land is forbidden by the Torah and is contrary to the Jewish belief that we are in exile and must wait for the coming of the Messiah.

There are extremist settlers who will quote verses in the Torah about the land belonging to Jews, and not making a peace agreement with the gentiles, and so on. But do not be fooled. These verses all applied in ancient times when Jewish possession of the land was commanded by G-d through His prophets. The Torah specifically says that Jews will be exiled for their sins (Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28), and that they will be redeemed by G-d (Deut. 30).
